We’re thrilled to team up with wildlife guru Nik Mitchell from Get Wild, who’s sharing his top tips for turning your garden into a five-star dining spot for your local hedgehogs this summer.
Nik’s known for dishing out fun, practical advice on how to care for the creatures roaming around your garden – and this time, he’s got hedgehogs in the spotlight. These prickly little visitors are on the hunt for a summer snack, and you can help them out!
In his latest video, Nik walks you through how to set up the perfect hedgehog feeding station – and he’s even got a clever hack to stop sneaky intruders (we’re looking at you, cats and foxes) from stealing the hedgehogs’ food.

Hedgehogs are having a tough time in the wild, with habitat loss and busy roads making it harder than ever for them to find food. By creating a dedicated feeding station, you’re giving these nocturnal wanderers a safe space to refuel — and helping support local biodiversity at the same time. Plus, they’re seriously cute dinner guests.
What should you feed hedgehogs?
Vale’s Hedgehog Food has been specially formulated to give hedgehogs the nutrition they need, without any of the harmful stuff. It’s packed with goodness, and unlike mealworms or bread (which can actually be bad for them), it’s perfectly safe and delicious. A shallow dish of fresh water alongside their food is a must – they’ll thank you with happy snuffles and maybe a little visit every night.
Want to go the extra mile? Keep part of your garden wild, with log piles or leafy corners where hedgehogs can shelter. Avoid using slug pellets and pesticides, as these can be deadly for them. And if you have fences, think about cutting a small ‘hedgehog highway’ hole at the base to let them roam between gardens – it’s like giving them their own secret tunnel system!
