TV presenter and wildlife adventurer Nigel Marven had an unexpected (and very spiky) guest in his garden this summer – a little hoglet on the hunt for food! And true to form, Nigel didn’t just help out – he’s using the moment to shine a spotlight on how we can all play a part in helping Britain’s beloved hedgehogs survive and thrive.
Nigel, best known for his wild escapades on some of the UK’s favourite nature programmes, has teamed up with Vale’s Hedgehog Food to spread the word about the importance of supplementary feeding. As natural food sources like insects and worms become scarce – especially during dry summer months and busy nesting season – hedgehogs often struggle to find enough nutrition to stay healthy.
What should you do if you spot a hedgehog snuffling around your garden or patio? Set out a shallow dish of fresh water and some specially formulated hedgehog food, like Vale’s, to encourage them to eat up and stay strong long into the year.
Nigel’s own garden guest is now recovering well at a wildlife hospital, but his visit serves as a timely reminder: our gardens, balconies and green spaces can become vital safe havens for these charming nocturnal creatures.

Because when it comes to helping hedgehogs, a little support goes a long way – just ask Nigel.
(Don’t worry! Nigel’s hedgehog friend was quickly taken to a local wildlife hospital shortly after this video and is doing very well!)
